Health Department. The whole system is thus co-ordinated,
and there is no overlapping. Consequently there is greater
efficiency and economy.
The success of dispensary treatment is greatly increased
when facilities are available for visiting the homes of consumptives,
examining contacts, and securing unsuspected cases
for treatment while in the early stages.
It must also be borne in mind that the treatment will be
handicapped unless the patient can obtain nourishing food,
sufficient clothing, and good home conditions. On this point
the Astor Committee suggest the importance of linking up
the Dispensary with voluntary organizations to secure help in
this direction.
Estimated Cost.
I estimate the cost of establishing a Tuberculosis Dispensary
to be:—
For land and buildings £1,000
For this amount a loan would be sanctioned by the Local
Government Board, the annual re-payment of which would
amount to £60 per annum.
The cost of furniture and fittings will be, approximately,
£100.
Annual Expenditure. £
Re-payment of principal and interest on loan
for land and building 60
Salary of Assistant Medical Officer of Health
(Tuberculosis) (£400 rising to £500) 400
Salary of Nurse (£100 to £120) 100
Salary of Health Visitor (£100 to £120) 100

being paid, about £1,120 per annum.
