To the Mayor, Aldermen, and Councillors of the Metropolitan
Borough of Lewisham.
Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit to you my Report on the
Vital Statistics and Sanitary Condition of the Borough for the
year 1912, together with the Returns required by the Local
Government Board and the Home Office.
The death rate for the Borough equalled 10.5 per
1000 persons living, compared with 11.4 per 1000 in 1911.
The Boroughs of Wandsworth and Hampstead alone recorded
lower rates in the Metropolis, 10.2 and 10.4 per 1000
respectively.
The birth-rate continues to decline, and the figure for
1912, 20.35 per 1000, is the lowest ever recorded in the
Borough.
The infant mortality rate equalled 69 per 1000 births
registered in the Borough, and it is pleasing to note that
in this respect also Lewisham compares very favourably
with other districts in the Metropolis, only two Boroughs
having a lower rate.
