DEATHS
Allowing for inward and outward transfer the total number of deaths
comprising 1,735 males and 1,775 females was 3,510.
The corrected death rate at 12.3 per 1,000 population is higher than England
and Wales (11.6 crude rate) and the crude rates for Inner, Outer and Greater
London Areas are 12.3, 11.0 and 11.5 respectively.
Sixty-eight per cent of the total deaths occurred in persons aged 65 and
over.
Heart and diseases of the circulatory system accounted for the largest
number of deaths. 1,604 occurring out of a total of 3,510.
Malignant neoplasms of all forms ranked second.
43 people took their own lives compared to 46 in 1970 and motor vehicle
accidents accounted for 44 deaths, a decrease of 2 on the figure for last year.
There were no deaths of mothers as a result of diseases of pregnancy or
childbirth. The maternal mortality rate per 1,000 births for Inner London,
Outer London and Greater London Areas are 0.17, 0.10 and 0.12 respectively.
INFANTILE MORTALITY
One hundred and one infants died before reaching 1 year of age, 12 less
than in 1970. The infantile mortality rate fell to 19.0 per 1,000 live births
compared with 20.3 last year.
