VITAL STATISTICS
POPULATION
The Registrar-General's mid-year estimate for the year 1971 is 304,410.
This is a decrease of 16,850 on the figure for the year 1970, and of 35,150
compared with mid-1965. The reason for the drastic decrease in population
over the last year is due to the fact that the mid-1971 figure is based on the
1971 Census and is, therefore, more realistic.
The number of live births exceeded the deaths, giving a natural increase
of 1,765. This would, therefore, appear to indicate a movement of residents
out of the Borough.
Based on information supplied by the Greater London Research and
Intelligence Unit a breakdown of the estimated population is as follows
Under 1 year 5,310
1 to 4 years 18,990
5 to 14 years 40,000
15 to 64 years 202,510
65 years and over 37,600
Total 304,410
LIVE BIRTHS
The total number of live births occurring to residents of the Borough was
5,275 comprising 2,746 males and 2,529 females. This figure was 284 less than
that for 1970, giving a corrected birth rate of 15.24 per 1,000 population. The
rate for England and Wales was 16.0 and the rates for Inner, Outer and Greater
London Areas are 15.1, 15.3 and 15.2 respectively.
During the year there were 1,017 illegitimate live births. This figure is
83 less than for 1970 giving a percentage of illegitimate live births per cent of
total live births of 19.3 and compares unfavourably with those for Inner London,
Outer and Greater London Areas which are 16.6, 8.6 and 11.5 respectively.
STILL BIRTHS
Still births for the year numbered 69, which is a decrease of 17 to the
1970 figure, and gives a still birth rate of 12.9. The rate for England and Wales
is 12.2 and for the Greater London Area it is 11.7.
