Links with Kings' College Hospital School of Dental Surgery
A helpful link has been maintained with King's and patients can if need arises
be readily referred for advice and/or treatment. The Principal School Dental
Officer has also been appointed as a part time lecturer on Childrens' dentistry.
These lectures have provided dental students with a deeper insight into prevention,
dental health education and the role of dental public health. The contacts made
with King's are invaluable and the opportunity to discuss matters of mutual
interest with the dental staff have helped to maintain a good liaison
Health Education
Dental Health Education has again been a very important part of our work.
Puppet shows were provided for 6,170 children at 36 schools, eight special
schools were visited, one junior school for a talk and a film shown to teachers
prior to a teaching project. During the year a booklet was devised on teaching
projects for schools to incorporate dental health and a simple knowledge about
the anatomy and physiology of jaws and teeth. One school carried out such a
project and it is hoped to encourage other schools to do the same.
A dental teach in was also held for some of the nursing staff and this
provided an opportunity to inform them about current views on dental topics
and to explain the purpose of the dental care exhibition.
The second Dental Care Exhibition was held at the Town Hall. This kind
of exhibition is only possible with the willing co-operation of a large number
of people. Dental and Nursing staff of the Borough, the borough's Public Relations
Staff, students from the School for Dental Auxiliaries and their staff, student
dental hygienists from King's, the two Inner London Education Authority
Dental Health Educators and the Inner London Education Authority dental
laboratory staff worked together to present "SMILE".
After the opening by the Mayor of Lambeth, the exhibition was open to
the public for seven and a haif days. Arrangements were made for parties of
schoolchildren to be conducted around the exhibition and it is estimated that
altogether, 5,000 attended. The exhibition was widely advertised by the use
of leaflets incorporating a competition and posters throughout the Borough.
A number of chemists agreed to show a special display card in their windows
in conjunction with a display of toobrushes and toopastes. The exhibition was
divided into the following sections
