THE FOOD HYGIENE (MARKET STALLS AND DELIVERY VEHICLES)
REGULATIONS. 1966 AND (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 1966
These Regulations came into force on 1st January 1967 and supersede corresponding
requirements in the Food Hygiene (General) Regulations, 1960.
The main changes from previous requirements are:-
(i) before food is offered for sale, it must be separated from any food unfit for
human consumption
(ii) persons handling 'open' food must wear clean and washable overclothing,
with minor specified exemptions
(iii) delivery vehicles as well as stalls must bear the owner's name and address
and identify the place where they are kept or garaged
(iv) requirements as to the provision of water supply and washing facilities are
extended to all food business
(v) all stalls selling 'open' food, with minor exemptions, must be effectively
covered and screened unless the stall is so designed and operated as to
protect the food until sold
(vi) requirements for disposal of waste are extended
There are six recognised street markets in the Borough selling a variety of foods
and the Council decided to set up a special joint committee comprising members of
the Control and Amenities, Health and Highways and Works Committees to consider
in detail the requirements of the regulations.
This sub-committee met several times during the year, and arranged meetings
with the traders and their officers to explain the Council's policy.
Public Health Inspectors have visited all stalls to give advice and explain the
requirements of the Regulations.
