INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD AND FOOD PREMISES
The pattern of work in the Food Division of the department has altered in
some ways during the year.
It is quite clear that the public is becoming increasingly "complaint conscious"
and general interest in standards of hygiene in food premises is now very marked.
Upwards of six million bottles of milk are produced every week in Lambeth
and inevitably complaints are received about unsatisfactory bottles, but complaints
would, I am sure, be reduced by at least 60% if only the public would stop misusing
milk bottles.
The Council's "clean food" campaign during the year created great interest,
not only to shoppers but also staff and management of food premises generally.
Requests were made by various organisations for lectures on food hygiene by
the Health Inspectorate and this is of course a useful and effective way of bringing
to the fore the dangers of food poisoning and the way in which everybody can play
his or her part in the production of clean food.
The year under review saw a speed up of "containerisation" transport of food
which means that examination of food imported into this country can in certain
circumstances be deferred until the container reaches its "inland" destination.
As this practice increases, officers of authorities who previously have not been
required to examine imported food, will find themselves having to do so.
A certain amount of food, mainly dried and pasteurised frozen egg is already
sampled in Lambeth under the Imported Food Regulations 1968, and owing to unsatisfactory
results consignments do, from time to time, have to be re-exported.
The following Regulations and Orders relating to food, the enforcement of
which is the responsibility of the Council, were made during the year-
Regulation or Order
Slaughter of Poultry Act, 1967
Food (Control of Irradiation) Regulations, 1967
Slaughterhouses (Meat Inspection Grant) (Revocation) Regulations, 1967
