and the area was extended to include:-
Nos. 2-10 (even) Canterbury Grove
Nos. 7-15 (odd) Lansdowne Hill
Nos. 8-20 (even) Lansdowne Hill
these latter properties being included in the 1966-1970 Slum Clearance Programme.
The Curnick's Lane area was confirmed as a clearance area and a Public
Enquiry was held in respect of the Industry Terrace area.
HOUSING ACTS 1957 AND 1964
During the latter part of 1965 and early 1966 it became obvious that the
amount of work that was necessary to be transacted under the Housing Acts in
respect of unfit houses, parts of houses, clearance areas and houses in multiple
occupation could not be achieved with the existing staff and three additional
Senior Public Health Inspectors (Housing) were appointed in February.
SLUM CLEARANCE PROGRAMME 1988-1970
A tenative Five-Year Programme for the years 1966-1970 of approximately
800 houses had been prepared by the staff of the Metropolitan Borough of Lambeth,
and for that part of the Metropolitan Borough of Wandsworth which is now included
in the London Borough of Lambeth by the Wandsworth Health Department. It
was decided, however, that this programme did not represent a true picture of the
Borough, and, as a matter of urgency, further surveys were carried out by the
newly appointed Housing Inspectors and the Programme for the five years has now
been increased to more than 2,000 houses.
It will be appreciated that it was necessary to agree this new programme with
the Greater London Council and the Minister of Housing and Local Government,
and I would like to record my appreciation of the co-operation my staff received from
these two bodies.
Since that time more detailed surveys are being carried out, and it is
anticipated that a further 112 houses will have to be dealt with by clearance
area procedure within the five years 1971-1975.
During the year a start has been made to deal with the clearance area
programme and 581 houses in 3 areas have been represented as unfit for habitation.
