school for use as a junior training centre which will go some way to meet the
problem although further accommodation will be required before purpose built
centres become available.
2. Adult Training Centres
Lambeth has one adult training centre. This is an all male centre at Clapham
and provides 90 places for subnormal men over 16 years of age. There are 47
Lambeth men attending the centre, the remaining places being occupied by trainees
from other boroughs.
Thirty-three Lambeth women attend adult training centres in other boroughs.
HOME TRAINING
The training and occupation for the house bound mentally ill is provided by
way of diversional therapy and four patients are receiving regular visits from an
occupational therapist.
Mentally subnormal children who are unable to attend training centres due to
physical handicap receive tuition appropriate to their needs from a home teacher.
RESIDENTAL CARE
In the absence of residential accommodation administered by the Borough
financial responsibility is accepted for Lambeth patients placed in homes and
hostels provided by other local authorities and voluntary bodies, and those
boarded out in private households. Placements are made for both long term and
short term care.
DAY HOSPITALS FOR MENTALLY ILL PERSONS
There is no day hospital within the Borough, but a number of Lambeth patients
attend Maudsley, Tooting Bec, West Park and St. George's Day Hospitals.
Social workers at the day hospitals are supplied by the Boroughs in which
they are situated. Home visiting in Lambeth is carried out by the Borough's
mental health social workers. There is close liaison between Lambeth mental
health social workers and hospitals (both day and other) where Lambeth patients
are treated.
HOME HELP SERVICE
The demand for the service was maintained during the year. Approximately
88% of the households serviced contained a person over the age of 65.
