Similar holidays are arranged (or school children as part of the School Health
Service at homes at Deal and Bognor Regis, run by the I.L.E.A. One hundred and
fifty four Lambeth children were sent on holiday during the year.
CHIROPODY
Chiropody service is at present provided in part directly by the Council and in
part by Lambeth Old People's Welfare Association to which the Council makes a
grant for the purpose.
Treatment is provided at six centres for certain priority classes including the
aged, expectant and nursing mothers, school children and the handicapped.
Sessions totalled 1,745 at which 10,807 treatments were given.
MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES
MENTAL HEALTH SOCIAL WORKERS
Mental Health Social Workers deal with the care in the community of the
mentally ill and mentally subnormal. They provide support and guidance to |
patients and their families and ensure that they receive appropriate community
care services and other social and medical services as required. Mental Health
Social Workers also have statutory responsibility in connection with compulsory
admission to hospital of the mentally disordered when this is necessary, they
also assist in arranging informal admissions for their patients when this is more
appropriate.
A twenty-four hour service is maintained in conjunction with the neighbouring
boroughs of Wandsworth and Southwark to deal with emergencies and operates through
the Lambeth Emergency Control Service.
DAY TRAINING CENTRES
1. Junior Training Centres
No Junior Training Centre passed to Lambeth on 1st April, 1965 and to date
it has not been possible to open any in the Borough.
The Health Committee has, on several occasions, expressed its concern
about the situation and has agreed to a number of temporary measures to ease the
position until the Council is able to provide an adequate service in the Borough.
These have included the admission of severely subnormal children aged 3 to 5
years to day nurseries free of charge, the opening of the special nursery unit at
Tulse Hill day nursery and the provision of transport to enable a number of
children to attend the training school at Queen Mary's Hospital, Carshalton. In
