Resignations
Our Orthodontist and one sessional Dental Officer resigned during the year.
Appointments
Three sessional Dental Officers and one full time Dental Surgery Assistant
were appointed during the year.
The staff at 31 December 1966
Principal School Dental Officer
3 Full time Dental Officers
6 Sessional Dental Offi cers
(Whole time equivalent = 2)
Thanks are due to the staff for their loyal service during the year.
The ratio of Dental Officers to the 43,000 schoolchildren in the Borough is
not a very satisfactory state of affairs, but this can only be rectified by the
provision of more premises.
Courses and Conferences
One full time Dental Officer attended a course on Paedodontics and
Orthodontics. The Principal School Dental Officer attended a course on the
dental treatment of handicapped children and a conference on dental health
education.
Dental Health Education
The continued high prevalence of dental caries, even of the 5 year old
entrants to school, demands a constant need to take every opportunity to impart
to children the need for proper attention to oral hygiene and the sensible control
of carbohydrate intake. Dental Officers quite rightly spend a good deal of chairside
time instructing children in oral hygiene. One school expressed a wish to
have their own dental health campaign and assistance was offered to them.
Dental Care is one of the Borough's monthly health topics.
Orthodontic services
After the departure of our Orthodontist new arrangements had to be made for
orthodontic treatment. One and a half sessions a week are devoted entirely to
orthodontic advice and treatment. An extremely useful link was arranged with
King's College Hospital Dental School for the Principal School Dental Officer to
attend the Orthodontic Department for one half day a week.
