Dental Services
Premises and equipment
Following the appointment, in July 1965, of a chief dnetal
officer, a survey of the facilities provided at the five dental
clinics in the Borough was carried out The standards of both
premises and equipment were found to need improvement in
certain respects, and action to secure this is continuing.
Dental inspection and treatment
In accordance with the policy adopted by the London
Education Authority, dental inspections were carried out only
for five-year-old school entrants, the parents of older school
children being invited by letter to make arrangements for any
necessary dental treatment either in the Borough's dental
clinics or by their own private dentists. Of those inspected,
about 60% were found to be in need of dental treatment.
Proposals for the fluoridation of water supplies which have
been approved by the Borough Council would, if implemented,
make a valuable contribution towards the reduction of dental
care in children.
Orthodontic service
Five sessions a fortnight for orthodontic treatment were
provided at Stock well Treatment Centre, at which some
children from Southwark and Wandsworth, as well as those
from Lambeth attended. Some dental officers also gave
orthodontic treatment at their own dental centres.
