LONDON BOROUGH OF LAMBETH
SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICE ANNUAL REPORT 1965
The arrangements for the medical inspection and treatment of school children,
which operated in the area of the London Borough of Lambeth under the London
County Council through the Health Divisions until 31st March, 1965, continued
without interruption after the transfer of local responsibility for these services to
the Borough on 1st April, 1965. The smooth transition was largely due to the
appointment by the Borough Council to senior posts in the Health Department of
staff who had long experience of the services under the London County Council.
Premises
The same premises continued in use as school treatment centres throughout
the year, and efforts continued to improve the facilities provided. In its review
of the Plan for the Development of the Health Services for 10 years 1966 to 1976,
the Borough Council has provided for three combined maternity and child welfare
and school treatment centres to replace centres in unsatisfactory accommodation,
and has adied the Inner London Education Authority to provide an additional school
treatment centre in the northern part of the Borough. Proposals have been initiated
for the use of a former maternity and child welfare centre, which is no longer needed
for that purpose, for audiology (for which the present provisions in the Borough are
seriously inadequate) for speech therapy and for additional dental services.
Services Provided in Hospitals
In addition to the services provided in the Council's own centres and those
of the Inner London Education Authority, treatment sessions for school children
are provided at King's College Hospital, The Belgrave Hospital and St. Thomas's
Hospital, as follows - School Health Service Social Workers make appointments
for and attend all the sessions.
King's College Hospital
Two refraction sessions a week, linked with orthoptics and
surgical treatment when needed. Dental treatment (with ambulance
or car transport if required) for children from physically handicapped
schools in the Borough.
Belgrave Hospital
Two refraction, one E.N.T. and one audiology (with auditory
training teachers) sessions a week. These sessions are not
reserved for children referred by the Borough, and additional
facilities for audiology are needed. Proposals for providing these
additional facilities are already under consideration.
