The present year has been marked by the formation of the New London
Borough with a population of 339,560.
Upon re-organisation no inspectoral staff was transferred from Wandsworth
and the inspectorate of the Metropolitan Borough of Lambeth had been depleted
by resignations and retirements so that existing staff was fully employed in
meeting day to day commitments for the greater part of the year.
However as additional inspectors were appointed it was possible towards
the end of the year to take the first steps in dealing with the many acute problems
facing the Council.
During the year the areas remaining to be dealt with under the Slum Clearance
Programme 1961/1965 were represented. A further programme for 1966/1970 has
been formulated and it is anticipated that with the engagement of more inspectors
in the coming year a supplementary programme will be prepared.
Under the Housing Acts 1961/1964 a great deal of attention has been paid
to houses-in-multiple occupation where applications for mcrtgage loans have been
made to the Borough Council and other Authorities. This has been fruitful work
in that many improvements in facilities and services in these houses have been
effected and potential overcrowding has been prevented.
