SUPERVISION OF FOOD
During the year the following legislation was made which had inter alia the
effects indicated -
The Meat Inspection Regulations. 1963'

These replaced previous Regulations and require that all carcasses of animals
slaughtered for human consumption shall not be removed from the place of slaughter
until inspected and if passed as fit marked with a prescribed mark Local Authorities
can now make a charge for inspection
The Milk (Special Designation) Regulations 1963
These re-enact with amendments the Milk (Special Designation) Regulations, 1960,
On and after the 1st October, 1964, the designation "untreated" replaces
"Tuberculin Tested",
The "Methylene Blue" test replaces the "Clot-on-Boiling" test
The Liquid Egg (Pasteurisation) Regulations 1963
The pasteurisation of liquid egg to be used in food intended for human consumption
is now required in certain cases. The method of pasteurisation and the test tcbe
satisfied is prescribed.
The Bread and Flour Regulations 1963
These impose requirements as to the labelling and advertising of specific kinds
of bread and impose restrictions on claims that any bread, biscuits, rusks or cereal
breakfast food is starch-reduced or can aid slimming and prohibits claims that any of
these foods have specific weight reducing properties
The Ice Cream (Heat Treatment Etc ) (Amendment) Regulations 1963
The addition of sugar to sterilized or pasteurized mixtures used in the manufacture
of ice cream is now allowed.
The Soft Drink Regulations 1963
These Regulations implement some but not all of the recommendations of the Fbod
Standards Committee in its report on Soft Drinks They come into operation in July
next year.
The Merchandise Marks (Imported Goods) (Raw Cucumbers) Order 1963
This Order requires an indication of origin to be applied to imported raw cucumbers
other than gherkins
The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in Circular FSH 12/63 drew the
attention of Food and Drugs Authorities to the fact that after 1st October 1963 H.M,
Customs and Excise will discontinue sampling glucose and invert sugar in brewing
materials for arsenic Sampling in future will fall within the general enforcement
responsibilities of these Authorities.
