Offensive Trades
Complaints were received of a smell nuisance from one gut scraping
premises, After a number of visits the nuisance was abated and has not recurred.
Upon investigation of another complaint of smell nuisance, the Public Health
Inspector found that the basement of a butcher's shop was being used for the purpose
of fat melting. The average quantity of fat rendered per week was about 13 - 14 cwt.
The nuisance of smell was confirmed and the attention of the Manager was drawn to the
fact that the business of a fat melter is governed by the requirements of the Public
Health (London) Act, 1936, which prohibits the establishment of such a business without
the approval of the Local Authority. A communication was also forwarded to the
Company concerned who immediately took action and ceased production.
