Five wasp nests were destroyed and eight infestations of bees were dealt with.
The nests of bees comprising t»o of "Bumble Bees'" and six of "Rogue Honey Bees"
having no value to Bee Keepers were destroyed
In last year's report was recorded details of a large infestation of Narcerdes
Melanura (Wood Beetle) in a block of Council flats and adjoining property. Although
it was dealt with at the time, a re»-infestation occurred during the present year. It
is considered that these beetles are encouraged by the presence of a quantity of old
wood probably left over from the previous buildings on the site and which was
deposited underneath the garden soil.
(d) Static water tanks - Air-raid shelters - Bomb damaged sites, etc.
The nuisance arising from the tipping of refuse on vacant sites is decreasing
due to re development.
The deposit of refuse and the accumulation of water in static water tanks still
present a problem. Although the Cleansing Superintendent, upon application from the
Public Health Inspectors, arranges for the removal of the refuse by his department,
and the stagnant water is pumped out by the London Fire Brigade, it is not long
before further complaints are received due to refuse again being deposited and the
partial filling of tht tanks with rainwater.
Notices are displayed where possible drawing the attention of the public to the
fact that the depositing of refuse on war damaged sites is an offence.
Visits paid to bomb damaged sites 206
Visits to air-raid shelters and static water tanks 70
Inspections of derelict buildings 129
The placing of abandoned vehicles on vacant sites in the Borough is increasing
and the co-operatiai of the Cleansing Superintendent is sought by the Public Health
Inspectors for their removal.
Complaints are frequently received in respect of derelict buildings. Such
buildings being dangerous can become a health hazard by the deposit of all kinds of
refuse, there is often difficulty in tracing owners and, in certain cases, the
Council has to remove the refuse itself.
Caravan sites and control of Development Act, 1960
Caravans
Applications for approval to site caravans in the Borough were given in certain
cases. In one case, caravans appeared on vacant land but these were quickly removed
following a visit paid by an Inspector.
