Disinfection and Disinfestation
(a) General

(The majority of free cases were carried out on behalf of elderly or infirm
persons or persons of limited means)
The department also undertook the disinfection of wards in a number of hospitals
upon request for co-operation in the control of hospital infection
In addition the routine disinfection of pillows and woollen blankets from a
hospital in the Borough continued for the purpose of reducing the likelihood of
infection, particularly of staphylococcal infection,
1,803 bags containing blankets and pillows were disinfected in accordance with
an agreed procedure
37 visits were paid by the Public Health Inspector to a factory to supervise the
treatment of 4,110 bales of clothing and other material for export. The total weight
of bales treated was 98 tons 12 cwts. In addition 10 oven loads were steam disinfected
at the Treatment Centre for the Company concerned
(b) Steam Disinfection
4,581 articles of clothing or bedding were steam disinfected
(c) Fly and other Infestations
Anti-Fly Treatment at Ashburton Grove Depot commenced on 22nd May and continued
during the summer months, The evidence of infestation was slight.
The Council's Housing Estates were treated for red clover mite, complaints having
been received from eleven blocks of flats during the season Seven estates were
treated; in the remaining four, natural abatement occurred.
