The Arsenic in Food (Amendment) Regulations 1960 increase the maximum amount of
arsenic permitted in brewers' yeast intended to be used in the manufacture of yeast products.
The Meat (Staining and Sterilization) Regulations, 1960 require with certain exceptions
all butchers' meat and imported meat which is unfit for human consumption to be sterilized
and all knacker meat to be stained or sterilized before entering the chain of distribution
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food issued an advisory leaflet 483 entitled
"Insects Pests in Food Stores". This is an instructive and helpful publication giving
details of various infestations which may be found in food and although the identification
of insects is a job for the expert the warehouseman and shop-keeper are made aware of a few
of the insects which they may come across in the course of their work, and how to control them
The Minister of Health and the Minister of Agriculture. Fisheries and Food issued two
further food hygiene codes of practice, No. 3 dealing with hygiene in the retail fish trade
and No. 4 with the hygienic transport and handling of fish. The importance of fish as food is
recognised and the trader is naturally concerned to ensure that all fish reaches the customer
as fresh as possible The same precautions that are necessary to achieve this are required
also in the interests of hygiene The Minister of Health in a foreword hopes that these
publications will prove to be a helpful and practical contribution to better handling The
Council recognising the importance of these codes of practice purchased a sufficient number
of each, and these were distributed personally by the Public Health Inspectors to the owners
or managers of fish businesses At the same time the Inspectors were able to discuss with the
trader any possible difficulties he may have as well as to explain the contents of these
publications
