(c) Fly and other Infestations.
Anti-fly treatment at Ashburton Grove Depot commenced on 24th April and
continued during the summer months.
Complaints continued to be received concerning wasps nests and the
disinfestation staff dealt with 10 cases during the year.
The infestation of the Council's Housing Estates by red clover mite
increased during the year and appropriate action was taken to keep this to a
minimum.
(d) Static- Water Tanks, Air Raid Shelters Bomb-Damaged Sites etc.
The tipping of refuse and the accumulation of water in static water tanks
and on bomb-damaged or vacant sites continued to rresent a problem to the Council
By arrangement with the Council's Cleansing Superintendent putrescible matter
was removed by his Department upon request from the Public Health Inspector A
petition was received in respect of two adjacent static water tanks and satisfactorily
dealt with. In another case the tipping of refuse overflowed from a
bomb-damaged site into an area of the adjoining property, causing nuisance to the
tenant. This ,was removed at the expense of the Council.
The co-operation of the London Fire Brigade in pumping out stagnant water
is appreciated.
In certain cases Warning Notices can be displayed under the War Damage Sites Act, 1949, drawing the attention of the public to the fact that the depositing of refuse'is an offence.

Clean Air Act, 1956.
The Clean Air Act, 1956 (Appointed Day) Order, 1958, brought into operation
on 1st June the remaining provisions of the Clean Air Act which so far had been
excluded. These include provisions relating to the prohibition of dark smoke from
chimneys, measures for dealing with grit and dust from furnaces, abatement of smoke
nuisances and the application of the Act to railway engines, vessels and Crown
premises.
