Anthrax Order, 1938.
During one week-end early in the year information was received to the effect
that a cow which had been slaughtered outside this area and had been conveyed
to a knacker's yard in the borough had been in contact with another carcase, both
being suspect cases of anthrax. The London County Council Inspector, who is the
officer authorised to deal with such cases, visited the knacker's yard and issued a
Notice under the Anthrax Order declaring and defining the slaughterhouse as an
infected place. The suspect carcase was destroyed and after full disinfection was
carried out the Notice was withdrawn. In the case of the second cow, which did
not come into Islington, anthrax was confirmed but in the case of the one conveyed
to the knacker's yard an indeterminate result was obtained, owing to penicillin treatment
during the life of the animal.
Later the same month information was received that a Jersey cow hide consigned
to a hide market in the borough was possibly anthrax infected. The London County
Council Inspector was informed and issued the usual Notice under the Anthrax
Order, 1938. After identification of the probably infected hide this was seized,
together with two others in contact with it, and removed for destruction.
