Diphtheria, fortunately, continues to be a rare disease. It will be seen from
the table above that there has been an average of not more than 1 confirmed case
per year since 1952, and no deaths. This does not signify, however, that an outbreak
could not still occur in an unprotected population, as happens from time to
time in this Country, and is certainly the position in some countries abroad.
