Acute Poliomyelitis
Although the poliomyelitis figures in 1957 were rather higher than in the
previous year it was not, as compared with some other years, one of high incidence,
there being 25 confirmed poliomyelitis cases in the Borough as against 13 in the
previous year.
1957 was the first full year in which poliomyelitis inoculation was offered to
the public through the Local Health Authority to selected groups as part of the
National Campaign. Dr. Harding, Divisional Medical Officer, has informed me
that 5,082 inoculations were completed in Islington during the year, in almost all
cases of children.

The cases reported for each of ten years are set out as under :—
