Ice-Cream.
Ice-Cream (Heat Treatment, etc.) Regulations, 1947-51.
Supervision of the Manufacture and Distribution of Ice-Cream.

During the year 196 visits were paid to icecream premises and vehicles. Number of premises registered :—

(a) for manufacture, sale and storage91

Bacteriological Examinations.
35 samples of ice-cream were sent for bacteriological examination. The
gradings of those submitted to the methylene blue test were reported to be as
follows :—
Grade I 23
Grade II 4
Grade III 7
Grade IV 1

The samples graded in I or II of the methylene blue test are considered
satisfactory, and samples graded III or IV unsatisfactory.
11 ice lollies were examined bacteriologically and with the exception of 1, in
which faecal coli was found, were satisfactory.
4 milky lollies were submitted for bacteriological examination, one of which
was found to contain faecal coli.
The samples containing faecal coli were from the same factory. Appropriate
action was taken and further samples submitted for examination were reported to be
satisfactory.
Chemical Examinations.
3 Ice lollies were sent for chemical analysis and the reports received were
satisfactory.
Tinned Cream.
In the early part of the year, a warning was broadcast through the B.B.C., and
the Press, regarding the results found upon examination of " Galtee " Cream, an
Irish product sampled at Birmingham- In some of the tins an organism which might
give rise to a serious type of food poisoning was found.
Consequent upon this publicity, a number of tins of cream, not of this brand
were presented at the Public Health Department for examination. One firm in the
borough reported that they held a quantity of tins of " Galtee " cream and samples
