WORK OF THE SANITARY INSPECTORS (HOUSING).
This work was carried out by Messrs. Hancock and Ashworth. House-tohouse
inspections were made in the following thoroughfares:—
Barnsbury Grove, Charlton Place, Edward Square, Newhall Street,
Pemberton Terrace, Queen's Place, Raynor Place, St. Clement Street and
Salisbury Road.
In consequence of these inspections 175 informal notices were served requiring
5,171 re-inspections and calls, which resulted in 1,617 improvements being effected
in 117 premises where the work required by the notices had been completed by the
end of the year, including 22 premises which were made fit by the owners without
the service of notices.
A considerable amount of time was spent by these Inspectors in an Area taken
over by the London County Council in Liverpool Road, and also in the survey of
properties which were represented by the Medical Officer of Health for clearance.

Gaskin Street (late Church Street) was dealt with by the Borough Council; No. 1
Area (comprising Nos. 31, 33 and 35, Gaskin Street) as a Clearance Area and No. 2
Area (comprising Nos. 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27 and 27a, Gaskin Street)
as a Compulsory Purchase Order on behalf of the Islington and Finsbury Housing
Association.
In regard to the L.C.C. Boleyn Road Area, inspections were made of a large
number of houses for the purpose of giving supporting evidence.
A representation was made in 1937 of the properties comprising the Cornelia
Street, St. Clement Street and City Garden Row (Nos. 1, 2 and 3) Areas to be dealt
with in due course by the Borough Council under Part III of the Housing Act, 1936.
