HOUSING ACTS, 1925-1935. UNDERGROUND ROOMS.
Two Sanitary Inspectors (Messrs. Hancock and Ashworth) were transferred
from district work to undertake inspections under the Housing Acts, and together
with completing the outstanding work on their districts, made the following inspections
under the Housing Acts:—

During the year closing orders were made in respect of 162 underground rooms
or parts of buildings, under Section 20 of the Housing Act, 1930, as extended by
Section 84 of the Housing Act, 1935, prohibiting the use of the underground rooms
for human habitation. The Medical Officer of Health reported that the lower
front room of 481, 483, 485, 487, 495, 497, 499, 501, 505, Liverpool Road, was in
each case unfit for human habitation. Notices were served, and as a consequence
orders were made prohibiting the use of the lower front room of the premises
mentioned for human habitation. In the following cases, consideration was
adjourned pending the carrying out of works to render the room fit for human
habitation : 507, 509, 515, 517, 519, 521, 523, 525 and 527, Liverpool Road.
In consequence of notices served on the owners of the premises 1 and 2, Bovay
Place, that they were considered unfit for human habitation, an undertaking was
given that the premises would not be used for human habitation. The premises
were subsequently converted into lock-up garages.
DEMOLITION ORDERS.
No demolition order was made during the year.
RECONDITIONING OF HOUSES.
During the year under consideration, 8 premises, namely, 2 and 4, Mayville
Street, 8, 9, 10 and 11, Gordon Place, and 200 and 204a, Blackstock Road, were
reported as having been rendered fit for human habitation consequent upon official
action by the Borough Council.
96 dwelling houses were the subject of informal notices requiring the owners
to effect repairs, and at the close of the year 28 of these had been satisfactorily
carried out. It was found necessary in 5 cases only to serve formal notices, these
premises being: 23, Boleyn Road, 34, Ecclesbourne Road, 26, Marlborough Road,
69, Pembroke Street, and 75, Rhodes Street.
