meningitis and dysentery; suspected cerebrospinal meningitis, 1 examined with
negative result, 1 dysentery, negative result. In regard to food poisoning, the
materials examined were: 2 samples of pilchards in tomato sauce, 1 dripping,
2 tinned salmon, 2 veal and ham pie, 1 salt meat, and in addition, 3 specimens of
faeces from affected persons.
During the year a sample of swimming bath water was taken from a public
swimming bath in the Borough and examined both bacteriologically and chemically ;
the result proved the water to be of excellent quality.
VACCINATION.
No vaccinations were performed by the Medical Officer of Health under the
Public Health (Smallpox Prevention) Regulations, 1917, as it was possible to
refer each case immediately to the Public Vaccinator of the district or institution.
Vaccinations.—Of the 3,702 births registered in 1934, the returns of
vaccination show that only 1,669 infants were successfully vaccinated, while 8 were
found to be insusceptible. There were also 168 who died unvaccinated, and 1,241
statutory declarations of consientious objection were obtained by the parents or
guardians; 79 vaccinations were postponed under medical authority, 273 removed
to districts the vacination officers of which were duly apprised, 236 removed
to other districts or places unknown, and one had Smallpox, thus leaving 27
unaccounted for. The return of certificates of exemption, therefore, represents
33.5 per cent, of the registered births.
