NORTH ISLINGTON INFANT WELFARE CENTRE.
6 and 7, Manor Gardens, N.7.
Pre-natal and Post-natal Clinics.—Closer co-operation has existed during 1936
between the Centre and the various hospitals that undertake pre-natal and postnatal
clinics, which is obviously an advantage to the mothers.
Although the work of the Centre has been somewhat affected by the increased
number of pre-natal and post-natal clinics held at Hospitals, the total number of
mothers attending the Clinics at the North Centre has increased during the past
year.
Free dinners are given at the Centre to nursing and expectant mothers with
the assistance of the Mayor's Grant.
SOUTH CENTRE.
Centre, 6, Clephane Road, N.l.
" Rose " Branch, 15, Popham Road, N.l.
Canonbury Branch held at 100, Canonbury Road, N.L
The work of the three Centres and the Convalescent Cottages for mothers
and babies and toddlers has continued on the same lines as last year.
The attendances are well maintained at the " Rose " Branch, which serves the
poorest part of the district, and where there is much need of the teaching which the
Centre can offer. The dinners provided through the Centre by the Invalid
Kitchens from the Mayor's Grant for necessitous nursing mothers have proved of
great value to the health of many mothers and infants.
EAST CENTRE.
Centre, 32, Drayton Park, N.5.
Branch at Highbury Quadrant Mission Hall, Hurlock Street, N.5.
A new venture on the educational side is the practical class given once a
month to young expectant mothers. They are taught to bath a new baby—make
its clothes—and the general hygiene of pregnancy. All East Islington mothers
are welcomed, and many such have been sent by Hospital Almoners.
Continued efforts have been made to reduce Maternal Mortality and Morbidity.
Free dinners are given at the Centre to nursing and expectant mothers
with very beneficial results.
WEST CENTRE.
Centre, 42 and 14, Richmond Road, N.L
Branch held at St. Luke's Mission Hall, Goodinge Road, N.7.
No new variety of work has been undertaken this year except that the massage
clinic has been started again with good attendances and results.
The observation wards have been full throughout the year, and the sunny
balcony room fitted with vita-glass gives the maximum amount of air and sunshine
to the babies and toddlers who are admitted to the Wards suffering from feeding
difficulties, and for training in good habits of sleep and feeding, etc.
The free dinners for which the Mayor sends a yearly Grant have been of the
greatest benefit to the necessitous expectant and nursing mothers, and the improvement
in health has been very noticeable.
A Statistical Summary follows, extracted from the Annual Reports of the
Centres for their year ending 31st March, 1935.
