(3) The method of refuse collection is on the same principle as for the past few
years. During 1932 81% was collected by mechanical vehicles and 19%
by horses and vans, the same percentage as for 1931.
(4) Both house and trade refuse and street sweepings are sent to the contractors'
dumps at Blackbridge and Holwell Hyde, Hertfordshire, where it
is deposited in layers of approximately 6 feet in depth, each layer being
covered with 9 inches of soil, and otherwise treated in accordance with the
Ministry of Health's recommendations. As you know, the dumps are
frequently inspected by the Cleansing Committee and myself and by the
Local Sanitary Officers.
(5) The arrangements for both collection and disposal of refuse are, I think,
generally satisfactory, and compare favourably with those which exist in
other Boroughs.
The motor vehicles purchased and already in use during 1932 in Islington
were:—22 Electricars, Ltd.; 4 General Vehicles; 1 Ransomes, Refuse; 1 Karrier,
Refuse; 1 Commercial Car, Refuse; 4 Shelvoke, Refuse; 1 Dennis, Refuse; 2

Staff Car.
