(3) The method of refuse collection is on the same principle as for the past few
years. During 1932 81% was collected by mechanical vehicles and 19%
by horses and vans, the same percentage as for 1931.
(4) Both house and trade refuse and street sweepings are sent to the contractors'
dumps at Blackbridge and Holwell Hyde, Hertfordshire, where it
is deposited in layers of approximately 6 feet in depth, each layer being
covered with 9 inches of soil, and otherwise treated in accordance with the
Ministry of Health's recommendations. As you know, the dumps are
frequently inspected by the Cleansing Committee and myself and by the
Local Sanitary Officers.
(5) The arrangements for both collection and disposal of refuse are, I think,
generally satisfactory, and compare favourably with those which exist in
other Boroughs.
The motor vehicles purchased and already in use during 1932 in Islington
were:—22 Electricars, Ltd.; 4 General Vehicles; 1 Ransomes, Refuse; 1 Karrier,
Refuse; 1 Commercial Car, Refuse; 4 Shelvoke, Refuse; 1 Dennis, Refuse; 2
Dennis, Cleansing; 3 Karrier, Cleansing; 2 Laffley; 5 Morris, Staff Cars; 1 Austin,
Staff Car.
REMOVAL OF DUST.
44 applications were received during the year by the Public Health Department
for the removal of dust.

Dust Receptacles Provided.—During the year 1,335 dust receptacles
were provided by owners of property under notice.
DISTRICT INSPECTORS' WORK.
During the year the fourteen district inspectors made a total of 51,506
inspections and calls, an increase of 806 inspections on the corresponding period
of 1931; while 13,869 improvements were effected in 5,375 premises; as against
12,815 improvements in 5,299 premises for the preceding year.
