CENSUS INFORMATION.
The Census enumeration in 1931 gave the population of the Borough as
321,795 persons; that is, 152,041 males and 109,754 females. The figures in 1921
were 330,737 persons, the males being 154,661 and the females 176,076. The
total persons in the Census of 1911 w as 327,403. The increase or decrease are
summarised as follows :—In the years 1911-1921 one per cent. increase, but in the
years 1921-1931 there is a decrease of 8,942, the percentages being a total decrease
of 2.7 per cent., which is brought about as follows :—Balance of births over deaths
gives an increase of 6.4 per cent., but the percentage lost by migration was 9.1.

POPULATION (ESTIMATED).
The number of the population at mid-year 1931, is estimated at 324,600
persons. There was, therefore, a decrease in the population of 6,137, when
compared with the number of inhabitants ascertained at the census in 1921.
The following tables give the distribution of the population in the several
sub-registration districts and wards, together with particulars of their areas and
densities.
