DEATHS FROM THE DISEASES OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM.
(Exclusive of Tuberculosis and Influenza.)
These diseases, which include Chronic and Acute Bronchitis, Pneumonia,
Pleurisy and Asthma, caused 957 deaths, or 304 more than in 1928. They were
equal to a death-rate of 3.0 per 1,000 of the civil population, and represented 20.1
per cent. of the total deaths registered in the Borough.
Acute Bronchitis.—There were 146 deaths as compared with 70 in the
previous year, 56 occurred among males, and 90 among females. The deaths of
12 infants under 12 months were registered.
Chronic Bronchitis.- 187 deaths were ascribed to it, 96 being males and
91 females. This return is 69 above that for 1928.
Pneumonia (All forms).— 436 deaths were registered, of which 251 were
males and 185 females, 107 above the year 1928. 82 infants under a year old
died from this disease, while between the ages of 1 and 5 years 73 died from it.
Above 5 years of age the deaths numbered 281.
211 deaths accurred in Public Institutions, chiefly the Islington Infirmaries.
