Proposals for the Abatement of Overcrowding.
The Housing of the Working Classes Committee of the Council have for some
time past been giving much thought and attention to the matter of the provision
of new housing accommodation both for the abatement of overcrowding and for the
purpose of rehousing of persons displaced under the Housing Act, 1930. There
are many difficulties in the way of securing suitable sites in a Borough like Holborn,
where land values are very high and the whole of the small area is built on.
Proposals are at present under consideration, however, for the erection of flats
on two sites, but these are not yet sufficiently advanced for details to be given.
It is hoped that in the report for 1936 it will be possible to record a considerable
advance in connection with the provision, of new housing accommodation.
A considerable proportion of the new housing accommodation for abatement
of overcrowding in London will be provided by the London County Council, from
which Holborn may expect to benefit in common with the other metropolitan City
and Borough Councils.
Rehousing.
During the year the Council entered into an agreement with the London
County Council for provision of rehousing accommodation for families displaced by
the Council's operations under the Housing Act, 1930, subject in each case to a
contribution of £1. 17s. fid. per annum being paid by the Council to the London
County Council for a period of forty years.
The agreement as originally proposed was for a period of one year, but during
1935 information was received from the London County Council that it had been
decided to continue the arrangement until further notice.
During the year 1935 three cases were approved by the Council for inclusion
in the agreement and of these one family had been rehoused at the end of the year.
INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD.
Dairies, Cowsheds and Milkshops.
In connection with the duties imposed on the Council respecting registration
of milkshops, opportunity is taken before entering the premises or the name of
the applicant on the register to inspect the premises proposed to be used, to
ascertain whether they are suitable for the sale of milk. From time to time it
has been necessary to postpone registration pending the completion of works
found to be required.
At the end of the year 1935, the number of registered dairies and milkshops
in the Borough was 152.
Eight entries were made in the register during 1935. Of these, 3 were cases
where a change of occupier had necessitated re-registration, and 1 was a new
registration of an itinerant vendor with premises outside the Borough.
The Sanitary Inspectors recorded 207 inspections of milk premises. It, was
not necessary to serve notice for any breach of the Order or sanitary defect.
