grit and dust replaces Section 5 of the principal Act. This new section
applies to a wider range of furnaces including those processes where the
material being heated forms the major part of the emission.
It also empowers the Minister to make regulations prescribing limits
on the emissions of grit and dust from the chimneys of furnaces to which
it applies. Section 2 comes into operation on the 1st April, 1969.
Chimney Heights
Section 6 of the Clean Air Act, 1968, introduces a new control by
local authorities over the height of furnace chimneys. Chimneys serving
processes not involving the combustion of fuel will continue to be controlled
under Section 10 of the principal Act, but Section 10 is repealed
as respect any chimney serving a furnace.
In London this is most important as there is no longer any exemption
as there was in Section 10 of the principal Act. Residences, shops, and
offices are also no longer exempted.
Atmospheric Pollution
Seven stations for recording the measurements of smoke and sulphur dioxide
emissions are maintained throughout the Borough.
The amount of smoke in the atmosphere continues to decrease and is
now well under 40% of the level before the Smoke Control Programme commenced
in 1958.
The ground level concentration of sulphur dioxide shows no increase
in spite of the increased use of oil in industrial and commercial premises.
