Fifty Years Ago
In 1913 there were 718 cases of tuberculosis notified and 818 other cases
of notifiable diseases; included in this latter number were 141 cases of diphtheria,
533 cases of scarlet fever and 98 cases of erysipelas. There were also 1,242 cases of
non-notifiable diseases of which 700 were measles and 371 whooping cough.
There were 49 deaths from measles, 12 from diphtheria, 41 from whooping
cough and 183 from tuberculosis—a total of 285.
If one looks at these figures and compares them with the figures for 1963
(no deaths from measles, diphtheria or whooping cough and 10 only from
tuberculosis) it can be seen what great strides have been made in preventive
medicine during the last fifty years.
