Posters were exhibited throughout the Borough, at the Chest Clinic and at
the Public Libraries where bookmarkers and leaflets were also distributed. A
slogan was also printed on all letters sent out by the Council.
Considerable interest was shown by the local Press, who not only reported the
arrangements for the Campaign but also published leading Articles on the subject.
Films were shown to the Women's Voluntary Services Mothers' Club, Student
Nurses at the West London Hospital and members of the Council.
An ode on the subject, which was prepared by a member of the staff of the
Public Health Department, was also widely distributed and published in the local
Press, the Council's News Sheet and the Staff Magazine.
The London County Council helped very considerably in the Campaign by
arranging for the supply of Posters and Leaflets and the loan of films.
The Corporation of London, in conjunction with St. Bartholomew's Hospital,
set up a Cancer Diagnostic Clinic for women over 35 years of age, which was made
available for any woman, as well as those working in the City. Details were sent
to all firms in the Borough, and 18 of the larger firms employing women agreed
to co-operate.
The Central Council for Health Education proposed to provide Mobile Units
to augment any campaigns arranged by Local Authorities, and it was agreed to
take advantage of one of these Units in conjunction with the County Council.
We communicated with the County Medical Officer of Health, and have been
informed that the London County Council are setting up their own Mobile Unit
to visit schools, etc., and to link it with publicity drives locally. It is hoped that
the Unit will be available in the near future.
Campaign re Oil Heaters
For a period commencing on 16th October, 1962, a campaign was held in the
Borough with regard to the safety of Oil Heaters, and as this coincided with the
commencement of Home Safety Year, it was decided to include general home
safety principles in the campaign.
Arrangements were made with the Oil Heaters Manufacturers Association
through their public relations organisation for the supply of descriptive panels and
oil heaters, at an exhibition which was held in the Town Hall. The London
County Council supplied posters and leaflets and also exhibits for display.
Posters and leaflets were distributed to the public by way of Old People's
Clubs, and the Council's Libraries who also distributed bookmarkers. Posters
were also displayed throughout the Borough.
With the assistance of the Jamaica Migrants' Service, leaflets and posters
were distributed to many of the coloured population in the Borough through local
branches of the West Indian Association and the Overseas Social Centre.
Health Information Bureau
As in previous years the Health Information Bureau continued to deal with
the varied enquiries coming daily into the Department. The Public make good use
of this Bureau and are provided with on-the-spot help and information.
2,500 copies of the 1962 edition of the Health Services Guide were printed
and distributed. This booklet is becoming better known with every edition and
each year more people ask to be put on the mailing list. The Guide has almost a
world wide distribution and is greatly appreciated by the recipients. The British
Council alone distributed copies to interested people in U.S.S.R., Buenos Aires,
Chicago, Vienna, Madrid Mexico, Thailand. Japan, Germany and Sweden.
