RATS AND MICE DESTRUCTION ACT.
The operation of the "Block Control" scheme, which
commenced in 1944, was completed during the year. This
scheme entailed making enquiries at practically all premises
in the Borough and resulted in the discovery of many
unreported infestations and the destruction of a large
number of rats.
In March, the Council decided to discontinue charging
occupiers of private dwellings for baiting work carried out,
and this policy has greatly facilitated the work. Occupiers
of business premises are mostly quite willing to pay the cost
of baiting and little difficulty in recovering these charges
has been experienced.
It was not found necessary to retain three men exclusively
on rodent work after 25th June, and one man was
accordingly transferred to other duties. The operatives
work under the supervision of the Sanitary Inspectors.

The following is a summary of the baiting work, &c carried out:—
