Although 70 notifications of dysentery were received during the
year, one case was subsequently rediagnosed as Food Poisoning.
The total of 69 shows an increase of 20 over the number received
in the preceding year.
Eight patients were admitted into hospital but no fatalities were
recorded.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum
There were no cases notified during the year under review
compared with 2 for 1968.
Poliomyelitis
No case was recorded during 1969 compared with one of the
non-paralytic type in respect of a non-resident during the previous
year.
Completed primary poliomyelitis inoculations carried out during
the current year numbered 3,073, 502 of which were by general
practitioners. Reinforcing doses totalled 3,798, again with 475
being given by general practitioners.
Acute Meningitis
The 12 notified cases of acute meningitis were all admitted to
hospital but no deaths occurred during the year as a result of this
disease.
Only 4 cases of acute meningitis were notified during the
previous year.
Acute Encephalitis (Infective or Post-Infectious)
There were no cases notified during 1968 but in the current year
the two notifications were both "post-infectious". One patient
developed the disease after an attack of chicken-pox and the
second following mumps.
Both patients were admitted to hospital but no deaths were
recorded.
Tetanus (prophylaxis)
During the year, 3,247 persons were protected against tetanus
and 6,246 reinforcing doses were given, both being part of combined
antigen therapy. Of these treatments, 384 and 569 respectively were
effected by general practitioners.
Malaria
During the year under review two cases of malaria were notified
compared with one in 1968.
