although some members arrive well before the opening time. A
number of meals served at the club are prepared from frozen foods
and these have proved extremely popular with our old folk.
These clubs provide opportunities for social activities and
organisers invariably arrange outings and Christmas treats for
their members. Some clubs are closely associated with local
churches and voluntary helpers play an important part in their
undoubted success. Assistants is also given by senior girls during
school holidays.
A notable feature of the Council's Luncheon Club Service
is the increasing number of elderly homebound persons now being
conveyed at least once a week to clubs for a mid-day meal.
Reciprocal arrangements are made with neighbouring
Boroughs for persons residing just outside Borough boundaries
to attend the Luncheon Club most convenient for them.
In June of the current year the luncheon club at 'Oaklands',
Shooter's Hill Road, was closed prior to demolition but a transfer
to St. James Hall, Kidbrooke Park Road, was effected without
interruption of the meals service, and attendances at the new club
have been more than maintained.
An entirely new luncheon club which was opened in May at
the Slade Community Centre, Pendrell Street, S.E.I 8, was
immediately successful and continued to gain such popularity that
the attendances were soon in excess of 80 persons per day.
Plans were made and by the end of the year negotiations were
begun for the provision of four new luncheon clubs at St. Luke's
Church Hall, Charlton Village, S.E.7, St. James' Church Hall,
Burrage Road, S.E.I8, Abbey Wood Methodist Church Hall,
McLeod Road, S.E.2, and the Charlton Liberal Club's new
premises at 59, Charlton Church Lane, S.E.7.
In 1964, the combined total of luncheon club meals consumed
in the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich and Woolwich was
95,118 but the year 1965 saw an increase in this figure to 119,945.
