The total number of meals delivered during 1965 was 88,988
compared with a figure of 70,325 provided jointly by the Metropolitan
Boroughs of Greenwich and Woolwich in 1964. For the
year as a whole, the average number of persons receiving meals
daily was 342 but, during the last quarter, this figure rose to 416,
an indication of the increasing use made of the service.
Meals are provided from three sources, viz., the Council's
kitchens at Woolwich and Eltham, a private caterer in Greenwich
and the Council's Luncheon Clubs which prepare frozen foods.
Subvented by the Council, the meal costs the recipient Is. Id.
The service was continued during the Bank Holiday periods and
on Christmas Day meals were delivered to 129 old people unable
to make other arrangements for a hot meal. Similarly, 150 persons
received this service on Boxing Day. Furthermore, tins of rice
and soup were delivered to 118 persons on Christmas Day for
consumption on Sunday, 26th December. Emergency food packs
for the use of old people were distributed during the winter
months to cover the eventuality of 'non-delivery' of a meal during
severe weather.
I should like to take this opportunity of extending my sincere
appreciation to the drivers, heloers and other voluntary workers,
particularly members of the W.R.V.S. and the British Red Cross
Society, who so willingly gave assistance in this service throughout
the year.

Luncheon Clubs
The Council's policy is an expansion of its Luncheon Club
Service with the object of enabling as many elderly residents as
possible to have at least one hot meal a day and to encourage
them out of their homes to enjoy companionship and recreation
with others. Each Luncheon Club which provides a hot main
meal and sweet for Is. Id., is open from 11.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.
