Unfit Houses—Sections 16 and 17.—In accordance with Section
16, the following end of terrace house was represented as
being unfit for human habitation and not capable at reasonable
expense of being rendered so fit. Demolition was considered
inadvisable due to the possible effects upon the adjoining house
and. under Section 17, a Closing Order was accordingly substituted.

Underground Rooms—Section 18.—The Council's powers to
close underground rooms are provided by Section 18 of the Act
of 1957, as qualified by the Housing (Underground Rooms) Act,
1959. New regulations for securing the proper ventilation, lighting
and the protection against dampness and effluvia or exhalation
of underground rooms received the Minister's approval and became
operative on 28th August, 1961.
At the undermentioned property two rooms being rooms,
the surface of the floors of which were more than 3 ft. below
adjoining ground level and not complying with the Local Authority's
Regulations, were considered unfit for human habitation and were
represented as such.

In respect of the following premises, a Closing Order previously
made was determined during the current year.

Part of Building—Section 18.—At the undermentioned property,
5 rooms being the ground floor and back addition, the
back addition (off), the first floor front, back and back addition,
were considered unfit for human habitation and represented as
such.

Slum Clearance—Part III of the Act.—Two areas. No. 2
(Maryon Road) and No. 3 (Rolfe Road) Clearance Areas, 1962.
represented during 1962 for slum clearance, obtained Ministry
approval during the current year.
Six sites, comprising some 29 dwellings, were represented
for slum clearance during 1963. However, in respect of the
No. 1 (Ransom Road) Area involving 2 vacant houses, the owner
objected and submitted details of the works he was prepared
to carry out which included improvements. The Council agreed
