Warden, Mr. Jones and his wife for the very happy and friendly
atmosphere prevailing at this Day Club, which is due in no small
measure to their unfailing interest in and efforts on behalf of club
members.
Meals on Wheels—With the exception of one day in February
when severe icing of the roads made driving hazardous, the four
vehicles used by the Association for the Meals on Wheels Service
have functioned continuously and our sincere thanks are due to the
drivers and helpers for their loyalty and devotion in all weathers.
The following is a statement of the number of Meals on Wheels
served during the financial year 1st April, 1961 to 31st March, 1962:
British Red Cross Society's van 7,693
Old People's Welfare Association van 7,720
Old People's Welfare Association minibus 7,161
Women's Voluntary Service van 6,336
Grand Total 28,910
The above figures show an increase of 2,503 meals supplied as
compared with the previous year. Demand on Mondays is still
not excessive and the Women's' Voluntary Service van has not been
used on this day.
The Association's van, having been in service for six years
was no longer considered serviceable and was replaced in May,
1962, with a new Morris Minibus, which vehicle now serves the
dual purpose of delivering Meals on Wheels and transporting elderly
persons when necessary.
We are deeply indebted to the members of the British Red
Cross Society for supervising the delivery of Meals on Wheels and
would express our deep gratitude to the Greenwich Borough Council
for the grant made to the Association, thus enabling us to
purchase the new Minibus and continue this very essential service.
Holidays for Elderly Persons—In the past the majority of
holiday parties of elderly persons have spent a fortnight at Margate.
This year, however, it was suggested that accommodation might be
booked at a different seaside resort and the Worship the Mayor
accompanied by the Chairman, Vice-Chairman, the Clerk and a
Public Health Visitor, visited Clacton and reserved the whole
accommodation at three hotels and one guest house for the period
4th May to 1st June, 1962.
