The seriousness with which the Public Health Committee
viewed the importation of contaminated Chinese egg products was
communicated to the Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health
and in subsequent correspondence it transpired that a meeting at the
Ministry of all interested local authorities was under active consideration.
During the current year, large importations of egg products
from various countries continued to enter the Borough and each
consignment was subjected to a percentage sampling in order to
ascertain its freedom or otherwise from salmonella infection, a form
of contamination to which these products are prone and the following
tables summarise the results :—
Chinese Dried Hen Egg Albumen.—All landings of this
product during the year have continued to be submitted to the heat
treatment process recommended by the National Albumen Advisory
Committee set up by the Ministry of Health. This process is undertaken
at Messrs. J. Palmer (Deptford) Ltd., Prince Street, S.E.8.
