Puerperal Pyrexia.—During the year one notification was
received in accordance with the 1951 Regulations which was in
respect of a Deptford resident, but from other sources 14 cases
concerning Greenwich residents were brought to the notice of the
department.
All patients received hospital treatment. There were no
fatalities.
Meningococcal Infection.—There were 5 notifications
received compared with 4 last year and 3 in each of the previous two
years.
All cases received hospital treatment.
There were three deaths from meningococcal infection recorded
the ages being 1 month, 21 months and 2 years respectively.
Acute Encephalitis. (Infective or Post-Infectious).—A NIL
return is recorded for the current year, a similar return to that for
1954.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum.—In respect of this disease, one
notification was received. The case was removed to hospital for
treatment and was kept under observation by the Health Visitor at
home.
The child made a full recovery.
Poliomyelitis.—It has already been pointed out at the
commencement of this Section that the vagaries of notification
procedure have led to misleading statistics concerning specified
administrative areas and this is emphasised by the notifications
received in respect of poliomyelitis.
During the year, 59 notifications were received of which 4 were
re-diagnosed. Of the 55 confirmed cases, only 17 were in respect of
Greenwich residents and a further 4 cases concerning residents
notified to Lewisham gave a final total of 21 for the Borough. Of
these, 8 were of the paralytic type and 13 non-paralytic.
Two deaths were recorded, one of which concerned a male of
31 years who died in Lewisham and for whom no notification was
received and the other was in respect of a boy of 16 years who
succumbed to the ' bulbar ' type.
