BIRTHS
The total number of live births registered in the Borough during
the year was 1,318 and of this number 915 occurred in St. Alfege's
Hospital, 27 in various Nursing Homes and 376 in private dwellings.
In 484 cases the parents resided outside the Borough and the births
were consequently transferred to the appropriate districts, leaving
a figure of 834. To this must be added 519 births belonging to the
Borough which took place in Institutions outside the Borough, thus
making a final figure for Greenwich of 1,353, a decrease of 28 from
that of the previous year. Of this total 668 were males and 685
females.

The Birth Rate for the year, calculated on the figure of 1,353
births, is 14.98 per thousand of the population, 0.34 lower than that
for 1953. The average rate for the previous ten years is 18.29.
The Greenwich Comparability Factor for births is 0.93 which gives
an adjusted rate of 13.93.
The Rates for the County of London and England and Wales
are identical, viz : 15.2.
Illegitimate Births which numbered 69 (representing 5.1 per
cent, of the total live births) showed an increase of 13 over those of
the previous vear.
The number of Still Births registered was 25 (14 males - 11
females), which is equivalent to a rate of 18.14 per 1,000 total births,
a decrease of 4.50 from that of the previous year.
