At the beginning of 1955 all these patients were well and their
treatment can be said to have gone completely according to plan.
The critics of this scheme of treatment say that by cutting out full
sanatorium treatment, the patients are being incompletely treated.
The above figures, although covering only a two year follow up, do
illustrate that this is not true. One must emphasize that only a
selected group of patients fit into this scheme by virtue of their
limited disease and good home conditions.
In 1953, out of 110 new cases seen, 49 only were admitted to
Kettlewell, while in 1954, out of 99 new notifications, 34 only were
admitted under this scheme. Although these figures represent only
about 40% of the new cases seen, their treatment in this way has
made it possible for the remaining 60% to be admitted to appropriate
Chest Hospitals or Sanatoria without any delay.
The surgical treatment of Pulmonary Tuberculosis has advanced
considerably in the past few years, especially since the advent of
chemotherapy.
39 cases from the Greenwich Chest Clinic were operated on in
1954. There were 2 immediate post—operative deaths, but the
remaining 37 patients are well.
