BIRTHS
The total number of live births registered in the Borough during
the year was 1,426 and of this number, 1,001 occurred in St. Alfege's
Hospital, 76 in various Nursing Homes and 349 in private dwellings.
In 593 cases the parents resided outside the Borough and the births
were consequently transferred to the appropriate districts, leaving
a figure of 833. To this must be added 548 births belonging to the
Borough which took place in Institutions outside the Borough, thus
making a final figure for Greenwich of 1,381, an increase of 82 over
that of the previous year. Of this total 741 were males and 640
females.

The Birth Rate for the year, calculated on the figure of 1,381
births, is 15.32 per thousand of the population, 0.98 higher than that
for 1952. The average rate for the previous ten years is 18.65.
The Greenwich Comparability Factor for births is 0.93 which gives
an adjusted rate of 14.25.
The Rates for the County of London and England and Wales
are 17.5 and 15.5 respectively.
Illegitimate Births numbered 56 (representing 4.0 per cent, of
the total live births) thus showing a decrease of 7 from those of
the previous year.
The number of Still Births registered was 32 (14 males - 18
females), which is equivalent to a rate of 22.64 per 1,000 total births,
an increase of 5.25 over that of the previous year.
