It was also desired to know as to how breast feeding of the
infant was affected in relation to various Income Groups.
Reports indicate that circumstances vary in different parts
of the Borough. In three districts, it is stated, income does not
have any great influence on breast feeding, which appears to be
governed more by maternal instinct and temperament.
On the other hand, in two working class districts reports
suggest that financial circumstances of the household compel the
young mother to seek employment , with the result that the babies
are cared for by relatives or neighbours and put on to artificial
feeding.
In one district, it is stated, the mothers in the lower income
group breast feed more successfully than those in the higher income
groups.
