team comprising 1 Investigator and 3 Operatives were attached to
the following areas:—Blackheath and Kidbrooke, East Greenwich,
Charlton, and West Greenwich.
From the 14th October each team working under the supervision
of the District Sanitary Inspector conducted a systematic
house-to-house survey. Report sheets were handed to the Record
Clerk for collation and statistical purposes.
All premises shewing evidence of infestation were treated in
accordance with procedure adopted by the Ministry of Food. Prebaits
consisting of clean sausage rusk were laid at suspected points
for a period of four days and then followed by a poison bait of zinc
phosphide.
Soon after the commencement of the scheme it was realised that
owing to the large number of business premises and wharves in the
Borough it was necessary to transfer one team to deal solely with
these premises and the following scheme was adopted.
The investigator was provided with special forms of request for.
treatment. These were then handed to the proprietor or responsible
official of the firm concerned and when the document was signed
treatment was immediately put in hand.
The charges made were based upon the size of the business and
the work entailed, the minimum charge being 5/-.
When the premises were clear of infestation and the applicant
satisfied, information was sent to the Borough Treasurer with the
appropriate charge assessed and an account rendered for payment.
From the inception of the scheme until the end of the year no
less than 7,566 premises were visited and where necessary, investigations
made. Of this number 310 were found to be infested by rats
and 107 by mice. In addition many bombed sites were also investigated
and these were found to afford excellent harbourage.
Many difficulties were encountered at several of the factory
premises, chiefly owing to the nature of the business concerned.
While a satisfactory measure of success has been attained, there have
been several instances of re-infestation. In 6 cases drainage defects
were discovered and remedied.
