adjustments to the machinery were accordingly made with satisfactory results.

The number of attendances during the year were as follow:—

It is interesting to observe the numbers attending the Vapour
Baths were over 100% more than in the years 1937 and 1938.
Rent and Mortgage Interest (Restrictions) Acts, 1920.—
1939.
Under the provisions of these Acts landlords are permitted to make
certain increases of rent and tenants whose houses are not in all
respects reasonably fit for human habitation may apply to the
Sanitary Authority for a Certificate to this effect enabling them to
suspend payment of the increased rent until the necessary works
shall have been completed to the satisfaction of the Sanitary
Authority.
During the year twenty applications were received and certificates were duly granted.
Landlords may also apply to the Sanitary Authority for a
report that the necessary works had been executed to the satisfaction of the Council. Seven applications were received, and reports
duly granted.
Water Supply.—During the year 516 water supply certificates
were granted under Section 95 of the Public Health (London) Act,
1936. Water fittings have been amended in 95 cases and extra
water supply to tenement houses in 11 cases.
Rodent Control.—The source of information of infestation of
rats or mice from premises in the Borough, other than in relation to
the Council's property, is usually on receipt of casual complaint.
Each case is investigated by the Assistant Rodent Control Officer
and advice and assistance given where necessary. The methods
adopted have been pre-baiting and poisoning and in a few cases,
gassing, trapping and the use of ferrets by a professional ratcatcher.
From the 1st January to 13th October, 279 complaints were
received. In 134 cases it was reported the premises had been cleared.
Control Scheme approved by the Ministry of Food.—The Council
decided to participate in the special Rat Campaign sponsored by the
Ministry of Food during 1946 on a grant basis from the Ministry of
60% of its cost.
