Underground Rooms.—At the end of 1937 there were
approximately 1,000 basement rooms in occupation, but it was
found that many could, with very little adaptation, comply with
the requirements of the Housing Act. During the year 49 were
closed as a result of official action, and in nine cases owners carried
out works required to be executed to comply with the regulations.
The Regulations in force at present were made under Section 18
of the Housing Act, 1925, and with a view to fulfilling present day
requirements certain amendments are under consideration.
The following statement indicates the work of the Housing
Inspector in regard to unfit houses dealt with under the Housing
Act, 1936.
